THE END OF AN ERA 19/6/07-8/10/15
After a short illness, this morning Romeo – ANYKA DREAMCATCHA ROMEO passed away.
Last night he seemed fine, ate his dinner, barked before it came out. Had drunk plenty of water and even been perched on top of the dog trailer during the day to watch the Lappies run around below him and look into the neighbour’s yards. He looked like he was recovering well
This morning he is gone & with him a chunk of my heart.
Romeo came to me from Anyka kennels in QLD and I will ever be thankful to Sandra Baker for sending him to me to love and cherish. Also thank you to Jutty Jus, owner of Romeo’s sire for being a wonderful friend thru the years.
A typical husky with a high prey drive, Romeo would sometimes supplement his diet and bring home a rabbit or duck. The alpha male in the yard and nemesis of Magnus, he was still a very kind and gentle soul who if forced to fight, would quickly hold his opponents jaws shut and lay on them so they couldn’t move. He befriended the neighbour’s dog, an anti-dog loving Staffy and was the only one to walk side by side with her, Romeo & Pigalette, beach buddies.
Everyone loved Romeo (except Magnus). He was magnificent and proud when you walked him and wouldn’t deign to notice the small white fluffies barking at him. A look was all it took to quell incessant yapping. All other dogs were beneath his notice. Regal is a word that comes to mind.
Romes was 2008 Sydney Royal Puppy of the Day and more recently as he eased gracefully into his retirement, 1st in Veteran Sweepstakes, Best of Breed & Open in Group at his last outing with many many awards in between. He never achieved his championship title as Siberian Huskies in Utility Group would always clash with Lappies in the Working Group so I just stopped entering him as I concentrated on the Lappies and he was so fleet and light on his feet, I couldn’t do him justice showing him as I got older. Thank you to his many wonderful handlers over the years, A common thread when you all handled him was that he was a joy to show and was power restrained as he glided around and commanded the ring. He certainly was a joy to know and have him in my life these past 8 years.
Romes and I even had a go at sledding which ended in a spectacular stack on the first corner lol. So many memories, so many stories. Each minute and every year was an adventure and a pleasure with him.
Champion of my heart, RIP sweet Romeo xxx
